The town that I grew up in is dying. It’s dying from the ground up; or, in Marks and Spencer’s case, the carpet. But I’ll come back to that.
The only new infrastructure being built in town these days are parking meters. Every side street, every gas-works approach, every foetid alleyway – they rise like mutilated bandits, stealing from those who are the town’s only carers: the few of us left who still use its services.
